Vtg E D Bullard Co Yellow Hard Boiled 502 Aluminum Hard Hat, Liner, Sausalito CA

Description

Vintage Bullard 502 Hard Boiled hard hat with 6-point suspension liner was found in my grandfather’s garage after he passed away.
When I recently emailed E.D. Bullard Co customer service and sent pictures of this hard hat, I received this reply to my request for more information about this hard hat:
“
We went to our expert for your information. She has stated the following:
1) Looks like a 502 hard hat
2) Label says Sausalito, CA, so I expect it was manufactured between 1957 and 1972 (before that, we were in San Francisco;
after that,
we were in Kentucky)
3) These were very popular with ironworkers. Many other workers used them as well. They were lightweight and durable.
4) No way to be certain it’s the original liner but it looks like the standard dihedral suspension that went in the 502 model.”

It is an aluminum hat. The base is 10 ¾” by approx. 9".
The
paint has come off in some places; there are scuff/scrape marks on paint, also. There is approx. inch long, shallow dent below the right ridge near the rear (See pics with orange arrow). The inside is mint green and has a few places on rim and bill where paint is off; there are a few places where paint has black-gray marks, also. See pics for best description of condition. The original Hard Boiled label is still attached. Part of label inside reads, “HARD BOILED”, “E.D. Bullard Company, Sausalito, Calif.”, ADJUSTABLE SIZE 6 ½” to 7 5/8” (See close-up picture for full label details). Under the bill of the hard hat is stamped “E.D. BULLARD CO. SAUSALITO HARD BOILED CALIF”. Item shows signs of wear and use--some discoloration, loss of color, abrasions, etc.
Inner Adjustable Suspension liner:
The plastic 6-point suspension liner frame has embossed in different places these words: "BULLARD HARD BOILED", “BULLARD DIEHEDRAL PAT. NO. 3041621” , “HARD BOILED”, “BULLARD PATENT NO. 3041621”. Liner headband has adjustment holes for 6 ½” to 8”. Liner attaches with metal clips to helmet’s inside metal clips and are functional. The forehead fabric material on the suspension liner is still pliable with no tears/cuts; the three suspension fabric straps do not have rips/tears; the plastic liner frame doesn’t appear to have any cracks. However, all of these parts do show some signs of wear and use and could use some cleaning. Please see photos for best description of conditions.
